CALHOUN, JAMES WESLEY
Funeral services for Jimmy Calhoun, 11 year old son of Mr. and Mrs.
Wesley Calhoun, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at the first
Presbyterian Church, Gibson City, with burial in Grandview Memorial
Gardens, west of Champaign. Jimmy accidentally hanged himself while
playing with a rope and a hangman's noose he had fashioned, in the
basement of his home at 8:30 Sunday evening. The popular sixth grader
had been active in scouting and the Little League baseball program and
would have played his final year on
the team his father manages. The Calhoun boy was a second class Boy
Scout and a first baseman on his Little League team, the VFW, which his
father has managed for several seasons. The Rev. William B. Edwards,
pastor of the Presbyterian Church, officiated at the funeral services
Wednesday afternoon. Pallbearers were Jimmy's friends and were Pat
Walker, Julius Ferguson, Mike Tompkins, and Denny Tongate. James Wesley
Calhoun was born May 21, 1948 in Champaign, the son of Wesley and Geneva
Adams Calhoun. The family
moved from Champaign to Gibson City about eight years ago. Mr. Calhoun
is local distributor of Sealtest dairy products. Besides his parents, he
is survived by his younger sister, Rae Ann; maternal grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. Emil Adams, Mahomet; paternal grandmother Mrs. Glenn Calhoun of
Bloomington, Ind. He was preceded in death by the brother and his
paternal grandfather. Jimmy was a member of Mrs. Margaret Smith's sixth
grade class and of Boy Scout troop 29, the team his father managed. The
boy was laid to
rest beside his younger brother, Ricky Dean who was a year younger than
Jimmy when he died in 1954. A regular "Tripoli" club was meeting at the
Calhoun home and the adult group had finished eating when Jimmy went to
the basement recreation room. A few minutes later his younger sister Rae
Ann, 9, went to play with him. She found her brother hanging from a
beam and summoned her parents and the guests. Efforts of a crew of
firemen, two physicians and ambulance attendants and others who worked
over the
boy with oxygen and artificial respiration proved fruitless, and Jimmy
was pronounced dead about an hour after the tragic accident occurred.
Coroner Frank Hunt III conducted an inquiry and found death to be
accidental. He theorized that Jimmy had tied the noose, thrown it over
the beam and stepped onto a chair, and then had placed the noose around
his neck. The chair apparently slipped from under him and the noose
tightened causing asphyxiation. A scout official told the Courier this
week that the hangman's noose
is neither taught as part of the Boy Scout program, nor is it
illustrated or described in the scout manual, thereby refuting rumor to
the contrary which had circulated in Gibson City. [5-5-1960 date on

COLLIER, J.H.
A telegram announcing the death of Hon. J.H. Collier of Hollywood,
California, at 12:30 o'clock, Thursday morning, Jan. 19, reached the
Courier last Thursday just after the paper went to press. His death
removes one of Gibson City's most prominent and respected pioneers and
business men. Settling here and embarking in the hardware business in
1871 when Gibson was only a tiny settlement, Mr. Collier was active in
public life from the first, being a strong factor in community's rapid
advancement. Although his interest
in public affairs extended beyond the confines of his home community to a
participation in state affairs, he was very successful in business and
real estate investment, building for himself a competence which gave him
comfort and security in old age. Nearly all of his contemporaries of
the early village days have passed beyond. A few years ago Mr. Collier
moved to California to spend the sunset years of his life. Not content
with inactivity, even in advanced age, he associated himself with an oil
corporation
at Los Angles. As President of the Yellowstone Oil Company, he was
active until his last illness. The news of his death was received with
sorrow by his friends in Gibson City. Mr. Collier was born in Oneida
County, New York, March 29, 1844, where he lived until 1855, when his
parents moved to lake County, Illinois, and settled on a farm. He
attended school at Antioch and when 18 years old, on July 29, 1862,
enlisted in the civil war, a member of Company D, 96th Illinois
infantry. The following year he was promoted
in regular order to be second lieutenant, first lieutenant and captain.
At the battle of Chickamauga, on Sept. 20, 1863, he was wounded, and
again at the battle of Nashville, on Dec. 16, 1864. Most of his service
was spent in the army of the Cumberland, and he was honorably discharged
in 1866. Upon his return to Illinois Mr. Collier engaged in
merchandising in Antioch, Lake County, where he was married to Miss
Lavina M. Ring, who died in 1872. In 1871 he came to Gibson City and
with his brother-in-law, the late
Henry J. Ring, of this city, opened the first hardware store in the
vicinity. Later he purchased Mr. Ring's interest and continued to
conduct the business until about 15 years ago, when he sold out and
retired. His business during these years was carried on in the store
building now occupied by the Wachs Variety Store and B.O. Van Antwerp's
pool hall on Sangamon Avenue. On May 5, 1875, he was married to Miss
Harriet McClure, daughter of the late Benjamin H. and Frances McClure of
this city, and she survives him.
He is also survived by two children, Benjamin H. Collier of Los Angeles
and Mrs. Andrew Strong of Hollywood, Cal., and one brother, George
Collier, of Farmer City. Mr. Collier was a Republican and held various
public offices. In 1873 he was elected supervisor for Drummer Township
and was re-elected and served several consecutive terms. He was a member
of the first board of trustees of the original town of Gibson and later
served as President of the board. In 1876 he was elected to the
Thirtieth general assembly
of Illinois and was twice re-elected, representing Ford and Livingston
counties. In 1888 he was elected a member of the state board of
equalization for a term of four years. Mr. Collier was a member of
Gibson Lodge 733, A.F. and A.M.; Gibson Chapter No. 183, R.A.M., of this
city, and Mount Olivet Commandery No. 33, Knight Templars, of Paxton.
He was the first Commander of the local Lo** Post No. 70, G.A.R., of
which there are now only about five surviving members. Soon after
disposing of his mercantile interests
in this city he sold the family home at the corner of Wood and Tenth
Streets to Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Newlin, who have since made their home
there, and he and Mrs. Collier went to California to reside, returning
to this city occasionally to visit at the home of John T. McClure and to
attend to his farming interests and other business which he retained in
this city. He was one of the five original stockholders in the Gibson
Canning Company and continued to hold an interest in this organization.

CRARY, WILLIAM CLARK
b. 1-31-1849 LeRoy, Il; d. 6-15-1882; s/o Willis & Hester Crary;
siblings: Almaretta Crary, John Crary; bur: Drummer Twp Cemetery, Gibson
City, Il. Parents moved to Ft. Recovery, Ohio. He was 10 years old when
they moved back to Illinois. At the time of his death, he filled the
position of bookkeeper in the Bank of Burwell, Mattison and Wilson in
which position he laid down his pen and closed the journal in the full
vigor of manhood, and almost before the sun had set the recording angel
had entered his name
on the register of heaven. Gibson City Courier, June 1882
CRARY, WILLIS
Willis Crary died very suddenly at six o'clock last Friday evening at
his home on Church Street. His death was due to heart trouble, induced
by acute indigestion. The funeral was held at the home at four o'clock
Sunday afternoon, Rev. R.P. Carson, pastor of the M.E. Church, having
charge of the services, assisted by Rev. J.M. Broady, of the
Presbyterian Church/ The remains were escorted to the cemetery by the
Men's Bible Class of the Christian church, who marched in a body in
front of the hearse. Mr. Crary had
been a faithful and loyal member of this class. The following obituary
was read at the funeral by Mr. Carson. "The deceased was born in
Hamilton County, Ohio, December 6, 1833, being aged 75 years, 7 months
and 24 days at the time of his death. His boyhood was spent about
Cincinnati and later he engaged in boating on the old canal through
Dayton. "He was united, in marriage June 23, 1852, to Miss Hester
Robbins, and in 1869 he and his family moved overland in wagons to
Illinois, and settled six miles
south of the present site of this city. When the town sprung up he moved
to this city in 1872, where for many years he followed the vocation of
an auctioneer. This gave him a remarkably wide acquaintance and made him
hundreds of friends all over this part of the county. For the past few
years he had retired from active work and had plenty of time to
cultivate his many friendships and enjoy a happy old age amid the scenes
of manhood's endeavors. "Of the five children of this home one died in
infancy, one
daughter in early womanhood and one son in manhood. Mrs. Emma Ragadale, a
teacher in Paxton schools, and Chas. S. Crary, of Wankesha, Wisconsin,
remains to comfort their mother. [8-6-1909; tr. by Donna Walton]
CRAWFORD, MARY
The funeral of Mrs. Mary Crawford, who died on Thursday of last week,
took place at the residences of her granddaughter, Mrs. D.B. Wallace, on
Church Street, at half past two o'clock last Saturday afternoon, Rev.
John R. Golden officiating. A large number of relatives and old friends
were present to pay their last tribute to the memory of the departed.
Mrs. Crawford was a native of Ohio. Her maiden name was Mary Hunt. She
was born in Ohio April 1, 1821, but moved when still a little girl to La
Salle county, Illinois.
The state of Illinois was then a great wilderness, with only a few white
settlements, and covered with roving bands of Indians, who were
frequently on the warpath. The dark tragedies of those days among the
redskins finally drove her family to return to Ohio for safety,
deserting their new found home. A few years later they returned to find
their homestead occupied by strangers. They again settled in La Salle
County. Mrs. Crawford was the oldest of a family of twelve children, of
whom three sisters and four brothers
survive. On Feb. 20, 1840, she was married to John Moore of the same
neighborhood, and to this union were born two children, James and
Margaret. Her husband died on Sept. 9, 1846. The son, James Moore,
survives her, and has been a resident of this city for a number of
years. She was later married to Harry Crawford, and one child blessed
this union. Both husband and child preceded her in death. Mrs. Crawford
united with the Methodist Episcopal church in the year 1835, when she
was only a young girl. She moved
to Gibson City about 23 years ago, and had since that time made this
place her home. She had lived for many years with Mr. and Mrs. D.B.
Wallace. Her health had been failing for some time, and she was feeble
with age. She died Nov. 8, 1906, at the ripe age of 85 years, 7 months,
and 7 days. Weary with the long extended pilgrimage of life, she fell
asleep in the arms of Jesus. Besides the surviving three sisters and
four brothers, she leaves on son, two grandchildren, and one
great-grandchild. Among those from
out of town who attended the funeral services were the following: Mr.
Bud Moore of Chicago (a grandson); John Hunt, William J. Hunt and wife,
Mrs. Ruth Miller, Mrs. Jane E. Dixon, Mrs. C.A Hildreth, Mrs. Laura
Cooper, Mrs. Mary Worthington, Mrs. E.T. Magarity, Mrs. Rose McKinney,
Misses Nettie Dixon and Della Hunt, John Hunt, Jr., William Hunt, James
Dixon, Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Thompson, and Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Dixon of Melvin;
Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Hunt of Paxton; and Mrs. Paul Hoobler Clarence

CRAWFORD, MARY
Mrs. Mary Crawford, a pioneer settler of Ford county, died at 11:45
o'clock yesterday forenoon, at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. D.D.
Wallace, after a protracted illness, aged 85 years, 7 months and 7 days.
Mrs. Crawford was the mother of J. W. Moore of this city, and had been a
resident of Gibson for 25 years. She had made her home with her
granddaughter for fifteen of twenty years, and had been in failing
health for a number of years. She was confined to her bed since last
March, requiring constant attention,
and her death was a merciful end to her sufferings. The funeral services
will be held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace at half past two
