Review: 75108 Clone Commander Cody

Posted by ,

The Star Wars Battle Figures have been a triumph so far, offering impressive accuracy and articulation, which is precisely what I look for in any action figure, LEGO or otherwise. 75108 Clone Commander Cody is the smallest set in the range by piece count, containing 82 elements, while it is priced at £14.99 or $19.99.

I mentioned my surprise at the low UK price in my review of 75107 Jango Fett and think this model offers equally good value, although it does not perhaps have the same appeal as some of the more iconic characters even despite the popularity of Commander Cody.

The Completed Model

Clone Troopers like Commander Cody are ideally suited to Constraction figures as a result of their armoured appearance, which is well represented here using CCBS panels. The figure is highly detailed all over, but the helmet is the highlight in my opinion. Almost every feature of the helmet in the movie is included from the orange visor and aerial and orange highlights around the air filters. The only notable inaccuracy is the absence of the dark tan striping which follows the ribbing along the top of his helmet, but the moulded detail is present.

The chest and left thigh elements are printed with the orange stripes unique to Cody's armour. There is some battle damage and a rank indicator included too which is very faithful to the film. The rest of the armour resembles that in the movie, but there are a few details lacking, most notably the orange knee plates which are white on this figure.

Commander Cody has the same articulation as other figures of this size, with ball joints at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles. The aerial on his backpack is adjustable as well and it looks great, cleverly represented using a foil element. The backpack itself is equally impressive, with a pair of tiny panels forming most of it, which allows it to match the film quite well.

No Clone Trooper would be complete without a DC-15A blaster rifle, so one is included here. The shape of the rifle is very accurate, although a second grip has been added underneath beside the stowed scope which allows the figure to hold it in about the same place as the troopers do in the films. The stock does not quite nestle into the shoulder as it should, but it certainly approximates the right stance.

The skeletal frame is visible from the back, just as it is on 75107 Jango Fett. On that figure I don't think this impacts upon its appearance too much but the contrast between the white armour and dark bluish grey ball and socket elements is noticeable here, which is a shame. Nevertheless, from the front I think it looks fine and the detail of the armour distracts from the odd colours which are just about visible.

You might notice that there is a pretty obvious gap between the torso and the backpack, which you can clearly see from certain angles. It would have been ideal had this been covered up but you can easily adapt the pose to account for it.

Overall

This is an excellent addition to the Battle Figures range. The helmet sculpt and printing on a couple of the armour elements look fantastic and the model looks superb on display, particularly with his enormous DC-15A blaster rifle. This character is well suited to display beside 75109 Obi-Wan Kenobi and 75112 General Grievous and is as poseable as any other in the range, as I have hopefully demonstrated in this review.

75108 Clone Commander Cody

My only significant criticism of the figure is that there is an unsightly gap between the torso and backpack, but the price point restricts the number of pieces included of course, so I think this is a reasonable compromise. Otherwise I am pleased with this figure on the whole and certainly recommend it, just perhaps not quite as highly as some of the others, particularly the largest two which are truly must-haves!

Thanks to the CEE Team for sending us a copy of the set to review.

By in Netherlands,

Bought and build all six models this week. Luke Skywalker was the worst of all. The other 5 are beautiful models with great features. Commander Cody looks great and is my third favourite model after Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Hopefully we'll see another 6 models in the near future. Han Solo & C3PO would be great!

Awesome. I would like this, although it would be a must-buy at $15.

If I buy any of these figures, this will be it.

Another great BF. The orange shoulder pads are a nice touch, and the DC-15A Blaster Rifle is well built. I'll be waiting until this goes down to about £10, I think - it isn't worth it at the £15 price.

I hope they sent Grievous I can't wait to see him and Obi-Wan

This is the only one of the battle figures I've bought, mainly because I felt it was the most aesthetically pleasing in terms of colour scheme and uniformity.

As you say, it looks great from the front but rubbish from behind but that's a common trait of all constraction figures.

By in France,

Not a really appealing figure. I think Captain Rex would have been more popular.
But anyway, the rear of the figure looks unfinished...

It would be nice if they made the joints in colors to match the figure.

Sales would support the fact he is a favourite character, at Bluewater he sold out before the other 5!

Quick question, will you happen to be reviewing any of the new BIONICLE sets along with this one?

By in Puerto Rico,

That's Clone Marshal Commamnder Cody (he had command along with Obi and Anakin of the Third Army Division of memory serves right). Neat figure, thinking of either gifting this or Grievous to my Dad.

The second wave of sets will include The Lost Planet Airmen.

Anyone?

Great review!

As much as I like the design of this figure, it's at the lowest postition of my personal wanted list of these figure. The reason? Every time I look at this set it makes me wish it was a more generic clone. I like commander cody, but this version of his armor I don't find memorable. He doesn't really fit in the current line-up, if you ask me. Alongside Jango he is the only one who doesn't directly oppose another figure. Unlike Jango Fett, I don't think he would last long against a lightsaber. Sorry, but as much as I love the others, Cody just doesn't do it for me.

Looks terrible from the back, amazing from the front. If they had just added a few pieces and changed some things around, it could have been so much better...

I want to see a classic stormtrooper now.

@MOCdoc Since 2012 CCBS has made limbs of the same length in alternating colors of black and dark bley. This is done to help the builders differentiate between the pieces so that they don't get frustrated about the sets having weird articulation. It's a common issue with people unfamiliar with constraction, because unless you are looking carefully it is easy to mix up the pieces.

Good review, although this is my least favorite of the battle figures so far due to the extremely gappy back. At this price point I think Jango and Luke were far more effective. This guy doesn't even have any Technic elements filling in the back of his thighs like those do (though to be fair, those probably do that more so they can holster their weapons on their hips than for aesthetic reasons). And the backpack doesn't fill in the gaps in his torso as well as Jango's jetpack does. Other than the exclusive orange shoulder pads, there's not much here that would motivate me to get this set instead of the First Order Stormtrooper coming in January of next year.

I notice his elbows are aligned incorrectly in this review. According to the instructions they should be aligned with the ball cup rotated 90 degrees relative to the shoulders so that their movement is front-to-back rather than side-to-side. It's a little bit hard to explain in text, but basically the arm shells and beams should be positioned the same as in your Luke review. Same goes for Jango in your earlier review of that set. This way the arms can move more realistically without having to rotate the forearm shells around to the back. This is the sort of mistake I see from a lot of builders who aren't used to building constraction sets (and some who are)!

By in United States,

This wave has pulled a 180 for me and my wallet. I was so excited about the EPVII sets, and not at all interested in Constraction figures, until I saw both on display.

I think the EPVII System sets are a bit dull, having not seen the movie yet, and plan on just minifigure grabbing most, and grabbing the X-Wing if it goes on sale.

On the other hand, I LOVE these Constraction sets, and Grevious looks great facing off against Obi and Cody. When I get Jango, he may come try n take a cheap shot an Obi while he's already engaged.

Not a fan of the Dark Side, so I may be the only one who doesnt love Vadar, and Luke just doesnt do it for me by himself, but these Clone Wars guys are great!

Looking forward to some more. Sabine, Kanan, heck all the Rebels, Storm/Scout Troopers would look cool. A generic (or named) Rebel Pilot, Snow Trooper, some of these EPVII folks. . . I may end up with almost as many of these as they make, and I did not like them at all at first. Well played Lego.
