Revision History:

The author (Marty Grant) is not related to John Patterson and Nancy Chapman as far as can be determined.

Special thanks to Viola H. Jones and Jennie Vee Pitts (deceased) for data shared on this family. There is a book on the Chapman family (that I have not seen) called Chapman Family History by Ira Chapman that includes this family. I don't know when or where it was published, though sometime prior to mid 1995. I have found some information online by the same person. I don't know if it is from the book or not, but worth looking at: Chapman Family Association Biography of Joseph Chapman.

I should first note that the documents we have for widow Nancy Chapman Patterson do not include any information about her husband.  The aforementioned book lists him as "John Patterson" though I don't know what proof there is that he was Nancy's husband. It does fit based on what we know about her though. However, some primary or at least strong circumstantial evidence would be helpful. Since we aren't sure of who Nancy's husband was I'll began my study with her.

Nancy Chapman was born ca 1769/70 per her age on the 1850 census (80). The same record shows her birth place as North Carolina. She is a proven child of Joseph Chapman (1745-1836) of old Pendleton District, SC (which later became Pickens District). Nancy was associated with Joseph and other Chapmans and was named as one of Joseph's heirs in his estate papers. His Revolutionary War Pension Record shows he was born in Halifax Co., VA and was living in Guilford Co., NC before the war. Perhaps Nancy was born in Guilford.

Nancy's children are proven by an 1831 deed in Hall Co., GA. The oldest one was born ca 1790/94, so she must have married by ca 1790 or just after that.

The 1790 census for Pendleton Dist., SC shows Joseph Chapman listed there with four females in his household. This would probably be his wife and three daughters. One of those could be Nancy if she wasn't married yet. However, there is a John Patterson listed just six houses away. His household is somewhat large for newlyweds though (1 male over 16, 2 males under 16 and 6 females). This may be a different John Patterson. Looking at this census there were four Patterson households there in 1790, a James Patterson and three John Pattersons. Here are each of those listings (since we don't know for certain that Nancy's husband was named "John").

p. 8 John Patterson 1-1-1-0-0
p. 9 Joseph Chapman 1-5-4-0-5
p. 9 John Patterson 1-2-6-0-0
p.10 John Patterson 1-4-5-0-0
p. 12 James Patterson 2-0-5-0-0

The only one who seems to fit is the John Patterson on page 8. His households suggests newlyweds with a small son and no other children. That fits what Nancy's family should look like at this point.

For the 1800 census there were five Patterson households in Pendleton (the census taker numbered each household, so that helps to show proximity, or lack thereof. The page numbers were not consecutive):

# 315 John Patterson 11010-40010-0-0
# 453 James Patterson 20010-10100-0-0
# 464 Thomas Patterson 10010-13010-0-0
# 504 Alexr Patterson 41010-23010-0-0
# 528 Joseph Chapman 21001-31101-0-7
# 744 John Patterson 50010-00010-0-1 <--- most likely candidate

Nancy would have been about 30 years old in 1800 so she should be in the 26-44 age group (born ca 1755/1774).  Using only that we can eliminate James Patterson from consideration, for his wife was too young. Nancy had five proven sons born during the 1790's. Using that we can eliminate John # 315 and James and Thomas for they didn't have enough sons. That leaves Alexander and John # 744. Nancy had only one daughter and she wasn't born yet by 1800, so that removes Alexander who had five apparent daughters at home in 1800 (it is a little too much to assume they all died before the 1831 deed that names Nancy's children).  That leaves only John Patterson (# 744) as a strong candidate to be Nancy's family. The case is further strengthened by the fact that John has one slave. Nancy's father Joseph Chapman had 7 slaves, and slave ownership was often a family affair.

This isn't solid proof that Nancy's husband was named John and was the right one, but it is compelling and it fits well circumstantially.

In 1810 Nancy was listed as head of household. Her last proven child was born in June 1808 so her husband must have died sometime between late 1807 and 1810. The John Patterson from 1800 (with the 5 sons) was not listed in Pendleton in 1810 adding further evidence that he could have been Nancy's husband. Nancy was listed next door to Joseph Patterson, her son, and just a few houses from her brothers John, William and Enoch Chapman. Even more proof is that Nancy had one slave, just as John Patterson did back in 1800. Nancy's oldest son Joseph was married and living next door. One of the other sons appears to be missing from the household. I don't know which one it was, but probably John the 2nd oldest. Since there is an "extra" daughter listed here who was old enough to have been listed back in 1800, but wasn't, I wonder if that could be one of the sons put in the wrong column. No way to be certain but it would account for the "missing" son.

Nancy is listed as head of household on the 1820 census in Pendleton District. She was just two houses from her father Joseph Chapman and listed next door to brother John Chapman. Her enumerations don't line up well with her known family members. Her sons Joseph (1790/94), George (c1797) and Jeremiah (c1794/1800) were heads of households in Pendleton District this year. The others weren't listed as heads of household, but only two sons seem to be with her, one born ca 1804/10 which would have to be Samuel, and one born ca 1802/04 which only fits Enoch (c1802). Where was John (c1794) and William (1795)? Where was Hiram (c1801)? Daughter Elizabeth (1808) wasn't listed either unless she was the female listed under 10 (1810/20) which doesn't fit, but is close.

In 1826, Pendleton District was split into Pickens District and Anderson District, dissolving the old district. Nancy Patterson and family fell into Pickens District as did the Chapmans.

By the time of the 1830 census Nancy and her children were gone from South Carolina having moved to Hall Co., GA sometime during the 1820's. Some of the Chapmans moved there as well.

Nancy isn't listed on the 1830 census as far as I could find. She was probably residing with one of her children. However, all of her children (except two) were listed in Hall Co., GA in 1830 and none had anyone her age living with them. Her son Samuel isn't listed in 1830 as far as I could find, nor is her daughter Elizabeth wife of James Cantrell. Nancy was probably with one of them in 1830.

On 28 Feb 1831 a deed was made in Hall Co., GA between Nancy and her children to her father Joseph Chapman back in South Carolina:

This indenture made and entered into this twenty eighth day of February Eighteen hundred and thirty one between Nancy, Joseph Patterson, George Patterson, John Patterson, Jeremiah Patterson, William Patterson, James Cantrell, Samuel Patterson, Enoch Patterson, Hiram Patterson, all of the first part and Joseph Chapman of Pickens District, South Carolina of the second part, wftnesith that the said Nancy Patterson, Joseph Patterson, George Patterson, John Patterson, Jeremiah Patterson, William Patterson, Samuel Patterson, Enoch Patterson, Hiram Patterson and James Cantrell for and in consideration of the sum of Two thousand dollars to him in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby is truely acknowledged hath this day bargained sold conveyed and do by these presents bargain sell and convey unto the aforesaid Joseph Chapman all that tract of let of land containing two hundred and fifty acres be the same more or less situate lying and being in the twelfth Dist. of said county known and distinguished by lot number two in said Twelfth District the same to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land unto him the said Joseph Chapman, his heirs and assigns and to his and their own proper use benefit and behoof form? in fee simple and the said Nancy, Joseph, George, John, Jeremiah, William, Samuel, Enoch, Hiram, and James Cantrell for themselves their heirs and assigns the said bargained premises unto the said Joseph Chapman his heirs and assigns forever and themselves and against the claim of all and by other persons or persons whatever . In witness whereof the said Nancy, Joseph, George, John, Jerimah, William, Samuel, Enoch, Hiram and James hath hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year above written. Recorded 10 Mar 1831. (Hall Co., GA Deed Book A, pp. 272-273, shared by Viola H. Jones)

On 2 Nov 1831 Nancy Patterson of Hall Co., GA appointed James Cantrell Power of Attorney to handle her part of the estate of "my father Joseph Chapman of Pickens District in the state of South Carolina." Witnessed by Willis D. Bennett and Philip M. Byrd. Nancy signed with a mark. (Hall Co., GA Deed Book A p. 646 shared by Viola H. Jones).

The year of the above may be off somewhat for Joseph Chapman didn't die until 1836.

Nancy Patterson, widow, was listed as drawing land in the 1832 Georgia land lottery in Cherokee Co., GA. She was a resident of Section 1 and drew Lot # 459, District 17, Section 2.

Nancy wasn't listed on the 1840 census by name. She was probably with one of her children that year. None of her sons had anyone her age with them (Samuel hasn't been located). Son-in-law James Cantrell did have a female age 70-79 (born ca 1760/70) which fits Nancy (c1770) perfectly. They were in Lumpkin Co., GA that year. Lumpkin had been formed in 1832 from parts of Cherokee, Habersham and Hall Counties.

Nancy was on the 1850 census in Lumpkin County still with the Cantrells. She was the only Patterson in Lumpkin that year: Page 48, Samfords District, # 46 James Cantrell 49 Farmer, $2000 SC; Elizabeth 41; James 17 Farmer GA; Thomas 14; Elizabeth 12; Morris 10; William 7; Samuel 4; John 1; Henry Strawl? 45 Carpenter SC; Nancy Patterson 80, NC.

Nancy seems to have died in the 1850's, probably in Lumpkin Co., GA.

Children of John Patterson and Nancy Chapman. They had nine children as proven by the 1831 deed in Hall Co., GA. Samuel is the only one of them I haven't been able to trace. It is possible he died shortly after 1831 or left the region. Each of these children should have their own web pages, but for now I'll just summarize what I know about them here. It is possible that "son" George could be a son-in-law instead of a son. That would mean his wife Mary (c1793) is part of this family.

  2. John Patterson (c1794)

  7. Hiram Patterson (c1801)

  8. Enoch Patterson (c1802)

  9. Samuel Patterson (c1804/10)

  10. Elizabeth Patterson (1808)

Joseph Patterson was born ca 1790/94 per census analysis. He was in his 30's in 1830 (born ca 1790/1800) and in his 40's in 1840 (c1790/1800). In 1820 he was age 26-44 (born ca 1775/94). Those reconcile to ca 1790/94. He was probably named for his grandfather Joseph Chapman.

Joseph seems to be with his parents in 1790 aged under 16 (ca 1774/90) and home in 1800 aged under 10 (ca1790/1800).

Joseph was married before 1810 for he was head of household that year in Pendleton Dist., SC listed next to his mother.

Joseph Patterson wasn't found on the 1850 census in north Georgia. I found a possible match in Talladega Co., AL. I don't have absolute proof that he is the same person, but he matches in several ways. One his age is perfect (60, born ca 1790). Two he was born in SC and his children were born in GA. Further her is surrounded by children who have the same names found in the John & Nancy (Chapman) Patterson family: George, Jeremiah, John, etc. Those children fit age-wise into our Joseph's earlier census households. None of this proves conclusively that this is the same Joseph, but it looks very much like it is based only on census analysis. Joseph's 1850 census entry: # 1690/1731 Joseph Patterson 60 Farmer SC; Mary 46? SC; Elias 18 Farmer GA; Patton? 15; Mary 14; Angeline 12. Next door was: George Patterson 22 Farmer GA; Elizabeth 18 AL; Mary 2 AL. And next to them was: John Patterson 38 SC; Martha 35 GA; Nancy 15; James 13; Joseph 11; Jeremiah 9; George 7 AL; John 5. A few more houses away is Jeremiah Patterson 30 SC; Mary 16; Joseph 2; and Elizabeth 9 months, born AL.

The only problem with the above is Joseph's wife. She is listed as 46 (born ca 1803/04) which doesn't match her 1840 or 1830 entry. It does fit with her 1820 entry, but not her 1810 entry. This could be: 1) a census error, her age is simply wrong in 1850; 2) Mary is a 2nd wife and not the same one from earlier records; 3) This is the wrong family entirely. I don't know which is correct but I'm partial to option 1.

I wasn't able to find Joseph on the 1860 census. They weren't in Talladega Co., AL that year or elsewhere as far as I could determine. The census taker for Talladega listed everyone by initial only and that makes it hard to determine who was who. There were some Patterson's there in 1860 but I can't reconcile any of them to match Joseph or his known family. I found son Elias and daughter Mary (Biddle) in neighboring St. Clair Co., AL in 1860, but wasn't able to find any of the others.

John Patterson was born ca 1793/94 per his age on the 1850 census (56). He seems to be with his parents for the 1800 census aged under 10 (ca 1790/1800) and perhaps home in 1810 aged 10-15 (c1794/1800). I say "perhaps" because there were three boys that age at home, but should have been four of them. There is no way to know which was missing in 1810.

John isn't home with his widowed mother in 1820 nor is he listed as a head of household in Pendleton Dist., SC where she was living. He was about 26 by this time, but apparently single, and could be living with anyone.

He moved with his mother and siblings to Hall Co., GA in the 1820's He married there on 6 Oct 1828 to Jane Chapman. They were married by Edward Cowen, Justice of the Peace. Jane was born ca 1813/14 per her age on the 1850 census (36), and born in SC. She was undoubtedly a cousin of John's. I have her parents listed as John Chapman (brother to John's mother) and Christina Diana Hubbard, but I have no idea what the proof is that connects Jane to that family, or if there is any such proof.

John Patterson is listed on the 1830 census in Hall Co., GA. No known relatives were listed nearby.

Lumpkin County was formed in 1832 from parts of Cherokee, Habersham and Hall Counties. John and family either fell into the new county or moved there before 1834. They were listed in Lumpkin on the state census as "John Patterson" with 4 white souls (which are probably John himself, his wife Jane, daughter Nancy and son Jeremiah).

By 1840 John and family had moved into neighboring Gilmer Co., GA and are listed there on that census. His brother Hiram Patterson was a few houses away as was Christina Chapman, Jane's mother.  Fields Chapman, relationship unknown, was also nearby. He was probably Jane's brother for they have a child named Fields C. Patterson.

They were still in Gilmer for the 1850 census: # 369/369 John Patterson 56 Farmer $1000 SC; Jinny 36 SC; Jeremiah 17 Farmer GA; Malinda 14; Louisa 9; Henson 7; John 4; Gallatin 4/12.

John Patterson appears to have died sometime between ca 1852 and 1860. Jane was listed as head of household on the 1860 census in Gilmer as an apparent widow. They were three households from Hugh Moore (1822), no relation to them, but he was a brother-in-law to my ancestor Samuel Patterson (1805). Henson Chapman age 54 (b. SC) was also nearby, relation to Jane unknown:: # 306/293 Jane Patterson, 46 House Keeper $0 / $200 SC; Louisa 21 GA; John 15 Farm Hand; Julia A. 12; James G. 10; Fields C. 8.

Jane was still in Gilmer for the 1870 census: Subdivision No 55, Ellijay PO, # 1196/1196 Jane Patterson 56 Keeping House SC; Julia A. 22 GA; James C. 20 Works on Farm,; Fields C. 19 Works on Farm.

Jane was listed on the 1880 census in Gilmer Co., GA living by herself: 907 Dist, G.M. Boardtown # 349/350 Jineni? Patterson 65 widowed, Keeping house born SC-SC-SC* (*last one overwritten and hard to make out). She was next door to son Fields Patterson and other family members were nearby as well.

I didn't find Jane on the 1900 census, so she may have died between 1880 and 1900 in Gilmer Co., GA.

John and Jane had 8 children as proven by the 1850 and 1860 census. The 1830 and 1840 census shows one more daughter who was gone by 1850. I think that is probably Nancy (c1829) who married her 1st cousin Samuel Patterson. I don't have absolute proof of it, but Nancy fits very well.

William Patterson was born 17 Dec 1795 according to shared information. I don't know what the source for it is. It does not agree with William's age in 1850 (51) or his age in 1870 (72) or 1880 (83). It does match his age in 1860 (64). He was born in South Carolina, presumably in Pendleton District.

William seems to be with his parents in 1800 aged under 10 (ca 1790/1800) and home in 1810 aged 10-15 (ca 1794/1800). He does not appear to be with his widowed mother in 1820 nor is he listed as head of household as far as I could find.

William moved with his mother and siblings to Hall Co., GA in the 1820's. He may have married shortly after arrival or perhaps before the move. He married Martha Welch during the early 1820's, or even before 1820. I don't know what the proof of her maiden is. This was shared by others. Her father is supposedly Ben Welch, but I don't know the proof for that either. She was born ca 1799/1800 (in SC) per her age on the 1850 census (50). Her age varies from census to census, so I don't know which is the most accurate, but her 1880 entry (age 80) agrees with this one. That reconciles well with her 1830 and 1840 census entries.

William is listed on the 1830 census in Hall Co., GA two houses from his brother Hiram Patterson. He was also near Henson Chapman and Isaac Chapman, probably closely related.

William Patterson is listed on the 1834 state census in Lumpkin Co., GA (formed 1832 from parts of Hall and other counties). He has 7 white souls in his household.

William is listed on an 1838 census in Lumpkin with 5 whites in his household.

William is on the 1840 census in Lumpkin Co., GA near his brother Jeremiah.

They are listed on the 1850 census in neighboring Forsyth Co., GA: Thirty First District # 812/812 William Patterson 51 Farmer $100 SC; Martha 50 SC; Mary A. 18 GA; Hiram 15 Farmer; Enoch 10; Sarah A. 8; Frances (female) 4.

They are still in Forsyth for the 1860 census. Their son Joshua Patterson (c1828) is a few houses away: # 840/840 William Patterson 64 Farmer $300/135 SC; Martha 63 SC; Enoch 21 GA; Sarah A. 17; Frances 13.

They are listed on the 1870 census in Forsyth: Chestatee District, Cumming PO, # 725/646 (and 91/79) William Patterson 72 At Home $60 / 0 SC. Note that William Patterson is blind as of the 1870 census.

He is listed as blind on the 1880 census as well. He and Martha are with their son Joshua, still in Forsyth Co., GA: Chestatee District NO 841, # 278/279 Joshua Patterson 52 Married, Farmer, GA-SC-SC; Darcus E. 49 wife, keeping house GA-SC-GA; Emily A. 17 daughter At home GA-GA-GA; Sarah E. 16 dau At home; Gordon B. 14 son works on farm; George H. 12 son works on farm; William 83 father at home, blind, born SC-Ireland-SC;  Martha, 80 mother, at home, SC-SC-SC; Anderson Smith, 13 nephew, works on farm; GA-GA-GA; John H. Woodliff, 26 Laborer, married GA-VA-VA.

Martha Welch Patterson died on 24 Nov 1891 in Forsyth Co., GA and William died there on 16 Apr 1895. These dates were shared and I don't know the primary source.

William and Martha have six children proven by the 1850 through 1880 census records. The 1830 and 1840 census show at least three other children: Daughter (c1820/25) home in 1830 gone by 1840; Son (c1820/25) home in 1830 and 1840 gone by 1850 and a son (c1825/30) home in 1830 and 1840 gone by 1850.

The daughter born ca 1820/25 could be Milly Patterson (c1823) who married Isaac Roberts in Lumpkin in 1838. She fits age-wise and they were two houses from William in 1840 in Lumpkin (but also two houses from Jeremiah Patterson). They were in Hall Co., GA in 1850. I couldn't find them in 1860.

The male born ca 1820/25 may be Toliver L. Patterson (c1820) for his son Joshua (c1853) was living with William's proven son Joshua in 1870. No relationship was given, but he would be his nephew if Toliver and the older Joshua were brothers. Further evidence is that Toliver was next to Hiram (1835) in 1860, Hiram is a proven child of William and Martha.

The male born ca 1825/30 may be Samuel M. Patterson (1826). I have no direct proof that he is their son, but he fits and I don't know where else to put him.

George W. Patterson was born in South Carolina (per 1850, 1860 and 1870 census), presumably in Pendleton District. His birth date is problematic. His 1830 and 1840 census entries show him born  between 1790 and 1800. His 1820 entry gives his birth at ca 1775/1794. Those three records reconcile to ca 1790/94. Those records are consistent with each other. However, in 1850 he is listed as 63 or born ca 1786/87 which is much too old and doesn't align with his earlier records. By 1860 he was listed as 66 (ca 1793/94) which does align well. He was 75 in April 1870 when he died (born ca 1794/95) which also works. If we ignore the 1850 entry entirely we can assume he was born ca 1794/95. This approximate birth year puts him in conflict with brother John (c1794) and William (1795). This can be reconciled two ways: He is a twin to one of them, or none of his census entries are all that accurate and he was born a little earlier or a little later.

A third option is that he doesn't belong in this family. I mention that because another researcher claims that he isn't part of this family, at least not a son, though obviously related somehow. He was a signer of the 1831 deed so that seems to make him a son of Nancy or why else would he be a party to the transaction? Perhaps he was a son-in-law instead? That is certainly possible if his wife Mary was one of John and Nancy's daughters. That is entirely possible for there was an apparent daughter (c1794/1800) at home with Nancy in 1810. However that same daughter wasn't with her back in 1800, but census records aren't always reliable. So keep that in mind, perhaps George isn't a son of John and Nancy but a son-in-law instead. If he is a son-in-law, who were his parents?

George seems to be with his parents for the 1800 census, one of five boys under 10 (ca 1790/1800). He also seems to be home in 1810 aged 10-15 (c1794/1800).

George married Mary (---) before ca 1814 in Pendleton Dist., SC. It has been suggested that Mary was a Bailey since their oldest known child was "Bailey Patterson" but that isn't proven as far as I know.

They are listed on the 1820 census in Pendleton Dist., SC next to brother Joseph Patterson.

They are still in Gilmer Co., GA for the 1850 census. They are next door to brother Enoch Patterson and Bailey Patterson is their other neighbor (probably George's son): # 846/846 George Patterson 63 Farmer $800 SC; Mary 63 SC. Note that both George and Mary are too old on this census.

Fannin County was formed in 1854 from parts of Gilmer and Union Counties. The Pattersons either fell into the new county or moved there before 1860. They are listed in Fannin on the 1860 census next to probable son Bailey and two houses from probable son Lindsey: 980 Dist GM, Chestnut PO, # 414/414 George W. Patterson 66 Farmer SC; Mary 67 Housekeeper $500/250 SC.

Mary (---) Patterson died between 1860 and 1870, presumably in Fannin Co., GA. I have July 1860 for her death, but I don't recall the source.

George W. Patterson died in April 1870 and is listed on the 1870 census Mortality Schedule in Fannin Co., GA. He is listed as 75, widowed, born NC, Farmer, cause of death "sudden death." Unfortunately no household number was given which might have tied him to one of his children. The previous entry was 564 and the next was 655, so whomever reported his death to the census taker probably lived in between those household numbers.

George and Mary had several children according to the 1820 through 1840 census records. None are proven as far as I'm aware, but it seems almost certain that Bailey (c1815) and Lindsey (c1818) are their sons. They were neighbors and they fit. That is circumstantial but it works. George did have two sons born 1810/20 who were with him in 1820 and in 1830 (c1815/20) and one was still home in 1840 but the other gone. That works well because Bailey married in 1837.

They also had an apparent son born ca 1820/25. He was home in 1830 and 1840 but gone by 1850. Samuel Patterson married Nancy Patterson in Gilmer in 1847. Samuel (1826) doesn't match age-wise and I think he is a son of William (not proven though); Henson Patterson married Viney Plumley in Gilmer in 1849. He is also too young (c1830) and is probably Hiram's son. Finally we have Lafayette Patterson who married Lucinda Williams in Gilmer in 1849. Dr. Lafayette Patterson (c1825) fits age-wise, but his birth place is listed as North Carolina (per 1850 census) and that doesn't fit, but that could be an error.

Census records show several daughters for George and Mary. They don't reconcile well from one census to another, so identifying them may prove difficult via census analysis alone. There were a few female Pattersons who married in Gilmer in the 1830's and 1840's. I haven't been able to find out enough about any of them to tie them to George's family. There were also plenty of Patterson marriages in neighboring counties.

Jeremiah Patterson was born ca 1794/1800 perhaps in the year 1800. He was presumably born in Pendleton District, South Carolina. He seems to be home with his parents in 1800 aged under 10 (ca 1790/1800) and home with his widowed mother in 1810 aged 10-15 (c1794/1800).

Jeremiah married someone (name unknown) in the 1810's in Pendleton Dist., SC. She was born ca 1800/04 per her ages on the 1820 and 1830 census. She may be Mary (---) born ca 1806/07 in South Carolina. Mary was listed as an apparent widow with children on the 1850 census in Gilmer Co., GA. I don't have solid evidence that she was Jeremiah's wife, but she fits and I haven't found anywhere else to place her yet.

They are listed on the 1820 census in Pendleton District on the same page with Archibald Patterson, relationship unknown. They weren't listed near each other though.

They were in neighboring Lumpkin County for the 1840 census. I don't know if they moved or fell into the new county when it was formed from part of Hall and other counties. He was just a few houses from his brother William. Jeremiah's wife is considerably younger on this census, so that is either an error or else his first wife died and he remarried in the 1830's.

I wasn't able to find Jeremiah Patterson on the 1850 census. There was no sign of him, or any apparent widow or orphans in Lumpkin County. In fact his mother was the only Patterson in that county in 1850. I also checked neighboring and nearby counties: Hall, Habersham, Union, Rabun, Cherokee and Gilmer. Plenty of Pattersons in those counties but no sign of Jeremiah. I found a possible match in Gilmer in 1850. A widow Mary and several children. I don't know if she is Jeremiah's widow or not, but the children she has in 1850 match age-wise with those in Jeremiah's household in 1840. That isn't conclusive proof but it does fit: # 948/948 Mary Patterson 43 SC; Andrew 24 Farmer GA; Guilford 22; William 18 Farmer; Reuben 15 Farmer; Mary 12; John 10; Malinda 7.

I'm not at all certain that the above are Jeremiah's family, but I'm assigning them as such until evidence is found to the contrary. They do fit very well into Jeremiah's 1840 and 1830 census households. Another bit of evidence is that Mary's son William is living with Mary Patterson Payne in 1880. Mary was a child of Hiram Patterson, Jeremiah's brother. No relationship was given between them, but Mary Patterson Payne and William would be 1st cousins if William is Jeremiah's son as I believe.

The appear to have lived in the part of Gilmer County that became Fannin County in 1854.

Mary and family were in neighboring Polk Co., TN for the 1860 census: # 1327/1327 Polly Paterson 50 SC; Andrew 30 Farm Lab born "G"; Gilford 28 GA "Idiot from Infant"; William 26; Reuben 24; Malissay 17; John 20. Daughter Mary Patterson 22 was listed nearby in another household occupation listed as "ML" for Mine Laborer.

I wasn't able to find Mary on the 1870 census. The only one of her children I could find was son Reuben who was still in Polk Co., TN that year.

I also looked for her and the children on the 1880 census. I wasn't able to find her but I did find her son Andrew in Polk Co., TN in the poor house. Reuben and his family were still in Polk, and I also found William there with his cousin Mary Patterson Payne (daughter of Hiram Patterson) and her family.

Unknown Daughter (1794/1800) John had no females (other than his wife) at home with him in 1800. However in 1810 widow Nancy did have an apparent daughter at home aged 10-15 (ca 1794/1800). She was gone by 1820. Was she their child or someone else who just happened to be living there in 1810 such as a niece or servant or something?

I noted in George Patterson's section above that he could be a son-in-law instead of a son of John and Nancy. His wife Mary was born ca 1793 so that fits, though not perfectly. More research may clear this up.

Hiram Patterson was born ca 1800/01 per his age on the 1850 census (49). It is interesting that both his 1830 and 1840 census entries show him younger than that by about a decade. Which is the more accurate? Those show him born ca 1810/15 which would put his birth after the death of his father.

Hiram seems to be with his mother on the 1810 census one of three boys aged under 10 (ca 1800/10). He doesn't seem to be home in 1820 though he may be the one male listed as aged 16-25 (c1794/1804) but that could be one of his brothers instead.

Hiram moved with the rest of the family to Hall Co., GA in the 1820's. The marriage records show that Hiram Patterson married Elizabeth Cantrell on  26 Aug 1830 in Hall County. However, he seems to already be married with at least one child by the 1830 census which was supposed to be as of 1 Jun 1830. This could indicate he had a previous wife or it could be that he and Elizabeth didn't get married officially until later when the first opportunity arose. She was born ca 1811/12 per her age on the 1850 census (38), born in South Carolina.

Hiram is listed on the 1830 census in Hall Co., GA between Henson Chapman and Isaac Chapman. Both are probably relatives. Hiram named his first son Henson Patterson. Hiram's brother William Patterson is two households away on this census. It looks like the census taker reversed Hiram and wife's ages, he being listed in the age group she should be in and she in his.

Hiram was in Lumpkin Co., GA for the 1834 state census. Lumpkin was created in 1832 from part of Hall and other counties. He was listed with four whites. That would be himself, his wife Elizabeth, and son Henson and daughter Mary.

Sometime between 1834 and 1840 they moved to neighboring Gilmer Co., GA and are listed there on the 1840 census. He is not too far from his brother John Patterson.

They were still in Gilmer for the 1850 census, # 358/358 Hiram Patterson 49 Farmer SC; Elizabeth 38 SC; Polly 17 GA; Jane 14; Margaret 12; Andrew 8; Nancy A. 6; Josaphine 1; James M. 12.

Hiram Patterson died sometime between ca 1854 and 1860 in Gilmer Co., GA.

Elizabeth and the children are listed on the 1860 census in Gilmer: # 325/308 Elizabeth Patterson 48 House Keeper, $125/125 GA; Margaret 20; William A. J. 18; Nancy A. 16; Josephine C. 11; Thomas M. 6.

I wasn't able to find Elizabeth on the 1870 census. She may have died in the 1860's or moved away or remarried.

Hiram and Elizabeth had nine children, eight proven by the 1850 and 1860 census. The oldest one, a son born ca 1825/30 was home in 1830 and 1840 but gone by 1850. I think this is Henson Patterson (c1830), but I don't have absolute proof he is their son.

Enoch Patterson was born ca 1801/02 per his age on the 1850 census (48). He was born in South Carolina, presumably Pendleton District. He was probably named for his uncle Enoch Chapman.

Enoch Patterson seems to be home with his widowed mother on the 1810 census, one of three boys aged under 10 (ca 1800/10). He appears to be home with her in 1820 as well, aged 16-17 (ca 1802/04).

Enoch married Violet Chapman, undoubtedly a cousin, in the 1820's, either in Pendleton Dist., SC or after the move to Hall Co., GA. Violet was born ca 1809/10 in Pendleton Dist., SC. I don't know who her parents were, nor do I know the proof of her maiden name. (It was shared with me many years ago by other researchers.)

They are listed on the 1830 census in Hall Co., GA. There are some "extra" females in the household who can't be accounted for. It is possible that the older female (ca 1790/1800) is Enoch's mother Nancy (c1770) who is otherwise missing in 1830. However, her age is way off if it is her.

They were in neighboring Gilmer Co., GA for the 1850 census, next door to brother George Patterson: # 845/845 Enoch Patterson 48 Farmer, $1000 SC; Violett 40 SC; Mary A. 23 GA; Jackson 18; Dorcus 15; John 14; Joseph 12; Maria 10; George 8; Lewis 6; Jeptha 2.

Fannin County was created in 1854 from portions of Gilmer and Union Counties. The Pattersons either fell into the new county or moved there before 1860. They are listed there on the 1860 census. Son Jackson and family are next door: 1130 Dist GM, Morganton PO, # 213/213 Enoch Patterson, 68 Farmer $500/300 SC; Violet 45 Housekeeper SC; John 23 Farm Hand, $0/200 GA; Dorcas 21 Housekeeper, $0/50; Maria 19 Housekeeper; George 17 Farm Hand; Louis 14; Jeptha 12; Willis 8.

They are still in Fannin for the 1870 census. They are next door to James Patterson (1815), no known relation. Other Pattersons are nearby, James' children and Enoch's as well as some nephews and nieces: Morganton PO, # 457/450 Enoch Patterson 67 Farmer, $400/300 GA; Violet 64 Keeping House SC; Darcus 33 Works on farm GA; Louis 24 Works on Farm.

Enoch Patterson died in the 1870's, presumably in Fannin Co., GA. I have a death date of 10 Nov 1875 for him, but don't know the source.

Violet is listed on the 1880 census in Fannin Co., GA next door to her son Willis Patterson on one side, and Nathan L. Patterson (son of James-1815) on the other: Mobile 1130th Militia District, # 181/181 Violet Patterson 69 widowed, Keeping House SC-SC-SC; Darkey 40, daughter, single, at home, GA-SC-SC; Joseph, 17 grandson, work on farm, NC-GA-Unknown.

I don't know when Violet Chapman Patterson died, though sometime after 1880.

Enoch and Violet had 10 children as proven by the 1850 through 1880 census records. The 1830 and 1840 census records indicate up to six additional children who are unidentified. Some of them may be nieces or nephews who were living with them at the time or other persons not related.

There were two boys born ca 1820/25 home in 1830. They were gone by 1840. There was one boy born ca 1825/30 home in 1830, also gone by 1840.

There was one girl born ca 1815/20 home in 1830, gone by 1840. There was a girl born ca 1820/25 home in 1830, gone by 1840.

There was a girl born ca 1825/30 home in 1830 and 1840, but gone by 1850.  I suspect this might be Nancy Patterson (c1828) who married Charles P. Sisson in Gilmer in 1848. She fits age-wise, but other than that I have no proof she belongs in this family. They were in Gilmer in 1850 (but not near Enoch), and in Fannin in 1860 next door to Henson Patterson (son of Hiram). Nancy isn't Hiram's daughter for he had a younger daughter of that name.

Samuel Patterson was born ca 1804/1810 per census analysis. This is uncertain because he didn't appear by name on any census record. He was a signatory to the 1831 deed wherein Nancy and her children of Hall Co., GA deeded property to Joseph Chapman of Pickens Dist., SC. That is the one and only record I have found for this Samuel.

Nancy had three sons born ca 1800/10 with her on the 1810 census. Hiram (c1801) and Enoch (c1802) are the other two, so the third one is probably Samuel. In 1820 Nancy had one boy aged 10-15 (ca 1804/10), and one aged 16-25 (ca 1794/1804) who is also 16-17 (ca 1802/04). Samuel is probably the younger one born ca 1804/10 since none of her other sons fit that age group.

As noted he signed the 1831 deed, so he was alive in Hall Co., GA at that point. He does not appear on the 1830 census in Georgia. There are three men of that name in Georgia that year, one in Elbert (too old), one in Walton and one in Jefferson County (Samuel W. Patterson). The other two are both born ca 1800/10 so that fits. Jefferson County is way east and south of Hall and not in the normal migration direction. Walton isn't far from Hall County at all, just two counties south, so that is a possible match. One problem with this is that the 1831 deed indicated that Samuel and the others were all residents of Hall County at that time.

In 1840 there were still only three Samuels in Georgia, but not the same places as in 1830. The only one in the right neighborhood was my ancestor Samuel Patterson (1805) who was in Union Co., GA in 1840. Samuel W. Patterson (c1810/20) was in Decatur Co., GA in 1840. This is in the south western corner of Georgia. I don't know if it is the same Samuel W. who was in Jefferson Co., GA back in 1830. Finally we have Samuel Patterson (c1810/20) in Henry Co., GA in 1840. Henry is very near Walton, but I don't know if this is the same Samuel who was in Walton in 1830 or not.

For the 1850 census there were 11 Samuel Pattersons in Georgia, none of whom were old enough to be John and Nancy's son, except for my ancestor Samuel Patterson (1805-1879) who was in Union Co., GA that year. There was a S. W. Patterson (c1810 GA) in 1850 Decatur Co., GA. This must be the Samuel W. Patterson from 1840. His wife was Sarah (c1803 NC) and their only child at home was Nancy Ruth (c1830 GA). They were next door to John Patterson (c1818 GA) who may be Samuel's brother or nephew. I'm reasonably sure that Samuel W. Patterson of Decatur is not the same Samuel who is John and Nancy's son.

Is my Samuel Patterson (1805) their son? He fits age-wise, and he did live in Union Co., GA which is the right neighborhood. The problems are that he was born in North Carolina and never lived in South Carolina as far as I can determine. I don't think he is this same person.

Elizabeth Patterson was born ca 1808/09 per her age on the 1850 census (41). She was born in South Carolina, presumably Pendleton District. I have a birth date of 8 Jun 1808 for her, but don't know the source.

She seems to be with her mother for the 1810 census, aged under 10 (ca 1800/10), and perhaps still home in 1820 aged under 10 (ca 1810/20) though that one doesn't quite match.

She married James Cantrell before ca 1824, either in Pendleton Dist., SC or Hall Co., GA. He was born 23 Mar 1801 (source?) in South Carolina. I have his father listed as Thomas Cantrell, but like James's birth date, I have no primary source for it.

They are on the 1830 census in Hall Co., GA (indexed as Cattell).

They were in neighboring Lumpkin Co., GA for the 1834 state census listed as "James Cantrell" with 7 whites. That would be James, Elizabeth, and children Nancy, Margaret, Jamima, James and one other.

They are still in Lumpkin for the 1840 census. Elizabeth's mother Nancy appears to be with them at this time (she was with them in 1850, so this is probably her in 1840 as well). They are two houses from Thomas Cantrell (1770/80), probably James's father.

They were still in Lumpkin for the 1850 census. Elizabeth's mother Nancy was with them: Page 48, Samfords District, # 46 James Cantrell 49 Farmer, $2000 SC; Elizabeth 41; James 17 Farmer GA; Thomas 14; Elizabeth 12; Morris 10; William 7; Samuel 4; John 1; Henry Strawl? 45 Carpenter SC; Nancy Patterson 80, NC.

In 1857 Dawson County was formed from the southern part of Lumpkin. The Cantrells either fell into the new county or moved there before 1860.

Elizabeth Patterson Cantrell appears to have died in the 1850's, for James had a new wife (Emaline Dobbs) with him on the 1860 census in Dawson Co., GA. I have 1856 for Elizabeth's death, but I don't know the source for it. 1860 census: Sanford's District, Crossville PO, # 554/477 James Cantrell, 59 Farmer $800/75 SC; Emaline 28 GA; William 17 Farm Laborer; Samuel 14; John 12; Joseph 9; Lorena Dobbs 20.

James is still in Dawson for the 1870 census: Sanford's District, Dawsonville PO, # 678/662 James Cantrell, 69 Farmer $400/200 SC; Emeline 36 Keeping House GA; Joseph 19 Farm Laborer; Martha 9; George 7; Sarah 5; Marshal 2.

They are still in Dawson for the 1880 census: Sanfords District, # 45/45 James Cantrell 79, Farming, SC-NC-SC; Emline 45 wife, keeping house GA-GA-GA; George W. 19 son GA-SC-GA; Marshall L. 11 son.

James Cantrell died on 4 Apr 1883 (source?), presumably in Dawson Co., GA. I don't know when Emaline died, though after 1880.

James and Elizabeth had 12 children as shared with me by other researchers, complete with full birth dates for each. I don't know the primary source for those dates, but they do seem accurate or at least compatible with the 1850 and 1860 census entries. 8 of the 12 children are proven by the 1850 and 1860 census. James and his second wife Emaline had four children as proven by the 1860 through 1880 census records.
