St Kilda's Nathan Brown has been referred directly to the AFL Tribunal for his bump that concussed Essendon's Adam Saad.

The incident occurred in the first quarter of Friday's game at Etihad Stadium.

Play was held up for nearly five minutes as Saad was stretchered from the field, and he took no further part in the game.

An assessment of intentional conduct with high impact to the head would see him sent directly to the tribunal, while an assessment of intentional conduct with high impact to the body will see him offered a two-week suspension.

On Saturday morning, it was confirmed match review officer Michael Christian had graded the contact as intentional, high impact and high contact.

During the game broadcast, some members of the Fox Footy panel said they expected Brown to cop more than a two-match ban.

"I think it's straight to the tribunal without a shadow of a doubt," Eddie McGuire said.

"The ball is gone and you are not expecting body contact in that situation, there's a duty of care and he failed to live up to that," Nick Riewoldt - a former teammate of Brown - added.

"He was late, he had a look and he cleaned him up and it's as simple as that, you go to the tribunal and from there it's probably four to six," McGuire added.

Brad Johnson was even more harsh in his judgement, calling for a "five or six" match ban.

Saad was seen sitting on the bench by the end of the game, and there's a chance he'll be available for Friday night’s game against Richmond.

However, Essendon coach John Worsfold said the incident was "disappointing", while Saints coach Alan Richardson conceded the incident didn't look good for Brown, saying the bump "was late".

Meanwhile, Cale Hooker can accept a $1500 fine for misconduct against Daniel McKenzie.

Hooker collected McKenzie high with a swinging arm.
